Growling Sea - A crossmedia exhibiton on the reality of life as a seafarer.
When i first started this project, it struck me, how little was known about the life of modern day seafarers. Caught in the myth of past times, their reality is all too often forgotten. Long working hours, harsh conditions and mental pressure form seniors belong to the daily routine. Homesickness is a constant companion. How do the people on board of these ships cope with such hostile elements of their work?
For my graduation project i went on board of a container ship, as well as spending time at the seafarer mission in Bremerhaven. I collected photographs and written texts, which tell about the motivations to become a seafarer, as well as their struggle. Through a 360° film, one can enter the ship and learn about how life has changed for seafarers, especially during the pandemic. As part of the exhibition, visitors were able to write letters to the seafarers, which will be shown in the seafarer mission Bremerhaven.
The project premiered during the Bachelor exhibition "Zwischenzeit" in Hannover and won first prize in the 360° category at Sehsüchte Film Festival in Babelsberg.
